Stainless steel is a wonderful material that will last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. But occasionally, they need a little extra TLC. Whatever problems strike, we have a guide to help you navigate them.
Chalky white spots
These can result from calcium build up from your water. To get rid of them, simply bring a 1:3 solution of vinegar and water to a boil, let it cool in the pan then wash and dry as usual.
Stuck on food bits
For stuck-on or scorched food, scrub off what you can with a non-abrasive sponge, fill the pot with soapy water and bring to a boil. Then scrape the bits away with a wooden spoon, simmer until the vast majority of the bits have released. Let it cool and wash and dry as usual.
Discoloration
Stainless steel can discolor to a rainbow hue, which usually occurs due to overheating. Use a little vinegar and water to break down the oxidized layer. Simply swirl a mixture of vinegar and water in the pan and give it a scrub with a non-abrasive sponge to wipe the discoloration away. Then rinse and dry. You can also use a non-abrasive, non-corrosive cleaner such as Barkeeper’s Friend for the same effect.
